What is a SUN AWARE camp?



Growing a sun safe culture so that sun safe behaviours become the norm at camps and beyond through:

  • Staff training
  • Sun Safety policy that is implemented
  • Setting standards of sun safe staff behaviour for staff and campers
  • Communicating sun safety policy to campers and parents/guardians


Creating a sun safe camp environment for campers and staff by:

  • Ensuring shade or shade structures are on site
  • Scheduling activities to occur in the shade during 11 a.m. and 3 p.m. when possible

SUN AWARE - Sun Safe Behaviour

Raising awareness and developing routines to practice sun safe behaviours like:

  • Applying a broad-spectrum sunscreen of at least SPF 30
  • Wearing sun-protective clothing that covers as much of your body as possible
  • Wearing a broad brimmed hat
  • Wearing UV protective sunglasses
  • Seeking shade between 11 a.m. and 3 p.m.

About the SUN AWARE Camp Program

Melanoma Network of Canada piloted the SUN AWARE Camp Program in 2014 and launched Ontario-wide in 2015. Check out our list of successful SUN AWARE camps from 2014 and 2015.
Camps who successfully complete and meet the sun safe criteria will be:
  • awarded a formal certificate
  • provided with a logo to place on their website identifying them as a certified SUN AWARE Certified Camp
  • recognized on Melanoma Network of Canada’s Sun Safety website as an easy reference point for parents concerned about sun safety at their child’s camp
  • included on a list of SUN AWARE Certified Camps, which Melanoma Network of Canada will distribute widely and share with parenting magazines and blogs
